At least three people were killed and seven injured during demonstrations staged by angry youth across Juba on Thursday night. Spokesperson of the South Sudan National Police Service, Col. John Kassara Koang Nhial disclosed on Friday.
The demonstrations were sparked by the killing of South Sudanese citizens by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) in Wad Madani, El Gezira State in Sudan.
In a security briefing on Friday, Col. Nhial said the victims are admitted at Juba Teaching Hospital for treatment.
“On 16th Jan 2025 at around 8:00pm, a demonstration was carried out by an unidentified group of South Sudanese in Juba specially in Gudele One, Gudele Two, Mangateen, Jebel Dinka, Jaborona, New Site, and Nyakuron residential area and the incident resulted into shooting and injury of 7 people and 3 persons killed meanwhile Shops were looted, the victims were admitted at Juba teaching hospital for medical treatment,” Said Nhial.
Similar incidents were also reported in other parts of the country. In Aweil town of Northern Bahar El Ghazal State, three houses belonging to Sudanese nationals were torched by angry protestors
“In Awiel town yesterday [Thursday] specially in Hai Salam, Naivasha, Maderia which resulted into burning of 3 houses that belong to a Sudanese nationals in Mathiang residential. The motive behind the demonstration in the two towns of Juba and Awiel is related to the killing of innocent South Sudanese citizens in Wad Medani by the Sudan Army Forces,” he added.
Meanwhile, the police spokesperson said at least 45 Sudanese traders were rescued to safety on Thursday night. He reiterated police commitment to protecting lives and properties of both South Sudanese and foreign nationals across the country.
“The police managed to rescue 45 Sudanese traders in Juba and they are now in the police premises and further more details will be communicated later on,” he said, adding “I’m assuring the people of South Sudan and all the foreign nationals that the police will continue in it’s mandate of protecting the lives and the properties of the people both in Juba and within other towns of South Sudan.”
